Samantha and Andrew’s Quail Ranch wedding was such a beautiful mix of classic style, a garden setting, and a celebration that felt personal to them. Their black, white, and green palette worked so well with the property: black bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos, white flowers, and greenery surrounded by the ranch’s established gardens. I’ve photographed weddings at Quail Ranch multiple times over the years, and I love coming back. There is so much variety here for photographs, from the garden paths and staircase to the orchard views. For Samantha and Andrew’s August wedding, we had all of that, plus a sunset that made stepping away for a few more portraits completely worth it.
A garden wedding at Quail Ranch
Located in Simi Valley in Ventura County, Quail Ranch is a private, family-owned avocado and citrus ranch with a Spanish Revival Ranch House built in 1933. Its architecture, mature trees, and planted gardens give the property a sense of history that carries through the photographs. You can see it in the white stucco, tiled roofs, shaded paths, and the broad staircase framed by flowers. I love being able to photograph a wedding with a consistent feeling while still giving a couple different backgrounds throughout their gallery. At Quail Ranch, a garden portrait, an outdoor ceremony, and a photograph overlooking the orchard can all feel connected to the same place.

A first look and a classic bridal look
Samantha and Andrew chose to see each other before the ceremony. Their first look took place on a garden path surrounded by greenery and purple blooms, with Samantha reaching for Andrew’s shoulder before he turned around. Their embrace afterward was such a sweet part of the day. Samantha wore an off-the-shoulder Essense of Australia gown from True Society in Portland, paired with a veil and long, loose waves. Bareface Beauté provided hair and makeup, while Celebrate Flowers and Invitations created the florals. The white bouquet, with its darker flower centers and greenery, tied in beautifully with the black wedding-party attire.

An outdoor ceremony beneath the oak
Their ceremony took place beneath the large oak, with a wooden arbor covered in white flowers and greenery. The tree canopy gave the ceremony photographs a strong sense of place, while the aisle views brought in their family and friends. Their friend Drew Groshong officiated, adding another personal connection to the day. I photographed both the wider setting and the closer moments: Samantha walking down the aisle, their hands joined during the ceremony, and their first kiss beneath the floral arbor. Those photographs tell different parts of the same story, and I like giving them room alongside each other.

Orchard views and sunset portraits
One of my favorite parts of photographing a Quail Ranch wedding is working with the different settings as the light changes. For Samantha and Andrew, that meant portraits among the garden greenery, walking together on the staircase, and photographs with the orchard and hills behind them. Later, the sky turned warm above the pink flowers and ornamental grasses. Photographing Andrew holding Samantha close, with the sunset above them, brought together the balance I love in a wedding gallery: the landscape and atmosphere, alongside photographs that keep the attention on the couple.

Dinner and dancing in the garden
The outdoor reception continued the white-and-green design with white linens, wooden cross-back chairs, floral centerpieces, and candle details. Krystal Whitelaw of Invited Event Planning + Design coordinated the day, with catering by Command Performance Catering, desserts by Camarillo Cupcake, and invitations by Truly Engaging. Dog-illustrated cocktail napkins and a signature-drink sign brought in a playful personal detail. Rogue Radio provided live music, and Samantha and Andrew chose “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates for their first dance. The dancing photographs are the right ending to this story: everyone gathered together, the couple in the middle of it, and the celebration fully underway.
